How I made the transition to eating plant-basedI'm a day late and a dollar short as they say, with this month's newsletter. But don't start putting up your fall/Halloween decorations quite yet! Last month I talked about how I switched to plant-based nutrition, eliminating meat and dairy from my diet. Here's the follow up article on how I did it. In it I cover all the (unexpected/crazy) things I learned along the way, how our culture effects the way we eat, and how making the change yourself can still allow you to eat what you want. Recommendations and stuffIf my attraction to the crazier/unexpected is not apparent in my switch to plant-based eating, then these couple of documentaries will do it: Our Nixon, made of never-before seen Super 8 home movies filmed by Nixon's aides, showing a surprising side of the Watergate scandal; and Nuts!, about the true story of Dr. John Romulus Brinkley, an eccentric genius who built an empire with his goat-testicle impotence cure. Both are directed and produced by Penny Lane, who also did a couple of short 15-minute films I saw a couple of years ago that were equally brilliant (and available on YouTube): Just Add Water: The Story of the Amazing Live Sea-Monkeys, and The Voyagers. I also finished a couple of books on design that were both great reads. The Shape of Design by Frank Chimero, available online in its entirety for free; and Creative Selection: Inside Apple's Design Process During the Golden Age of Steve Jobs by Ken Kocienda, an engineer that worked on the original iPhone who gives a nuanced look at how design is more than just the way something looks. |
